A workflowmanagement system (WMS) is a software solution for managing workflows and executing pre-configured workflows.
The workflow engine interprets events in real time, such as a document arriving by email or a deadline expiring, and responds with an action defined within the pre-configured workflow. This action can be to store the document in a document management system, for example, or to escalate overdue work to management.
Workflowmanagement systems can usually identify and classify a range of events, then independently execute certain actions. Both the events and the actions to execute, however, are generally completed by the applications implemented for those specific events and actions.
